4Signals in the Filter

The Framework

The Control Code Filter™

Four signals, run in any order, on any sentence. The Filter reads what language does — which is why it works after "but he means well" has already ended every other conversation.

Intent explains character. Function explains harm. Safety depends on function.
SIGNAL 01

FRAME

Every controlling sentence installs a picture of reality where the speaker is reasonable and you are the problem.

→ What world does this sentence assume?
SIGNAL 02

FUNCTION

The stable diagnostic axis. Whatever the speaker felt, the sentence performed a job. Name the job.

→ What does this sentence do?
SIGNAL 03

ELEVATION

Watch who ends up holding the authority — over the facts, the feelings, the money, the story.

→ Who gets promoted by this sentence?
SIGNAL 04

HARM

Often felt before it's understood: the editing of yourself, the flinch before you speak. Feel it first, then trace it back.

→ Was my agency preserved?

The Architecture

Beneath the Filter

The Filter is the instrument. Underneath it sits a full theory of what coercive control takes, how it hides, and why it pays.

CONCEPT 01

COGNITIVE
SOVEREIGNTY

The primary injury. Before the isolation, the money, the fear, control takes two things: trust in your own perceptions and the authority to interpret your own life. Every visible harm sits downstream of that capture.

CONCEPT 02

THE AGENCY
STANDARD

Forty years of research asked "Was it bad enough?" — a question no one can answer from inside. The framework runs a different one: "Was my agency preserved?" That question has an answer available in real time, and it requires proving no one's villainy.

The Reporter

Built From the Record

Lindsay Stoker, creator of The Control Code

Lindsay Stoker spent twenty years as a certified stenographic court reporter, taking down adversarial speech word for word — depositions, trials, the exact sentences people use on each other under oath and under pressure.

The Control Code came out of that record. Pattern by pattern, transcript by transcript, the same linguistic moves kept appearing wherever one person was quietly dismantling another's grip on their own reality. She named the moves, built a filter to catch them, and took it public. Millions of people have now watched it run.

The framework stands on the shoulders of Singer, Bancroft, and Stark — and extends the line: the primary injury of coercive control is cognitive sovereignty loss. The target doesn't just lose safety. She loses custody of her own mind.

Training & Speaking

Teach the Filter

The Filter is trainable. In a pilot study with professional sign language interpreters, participants reached full post-training recognition accuracy on coercive language patterns.

Lindsay delivers keynotes, conference sessions, and professional training built for people who encounter controlling language in their work:

  • Legal professionals & court personnel
  • Interpreters & court reporters
  • DV advocates & crisis responders
  • Clinicians & CE audiences
